Plymouth Art Weekender 2019 will see the launch of a series of events marking the 40th anniversary of Lenkiewicz’s project on Old Age (1979). We begin with an exhibition at St Saviours Hall (27, 28, 29 September; open daily 11am-6pm, admission free) showing paintings by Louise Courtnell. The paintings are a selection from fifty of Courtnell’s studies of the elderly villagers of Kingsand and Cawsand, poignantly juxtaposed with youthful photographs of the sitters.
In keeping with the general theme of how the experience of ageing has changed over the past four decades, complementing Courtnell’s oil paintings will be previously unseen material from the Lenkiewicz archive. A unique and fascinating collection of original works by artist Robert Lenkiewicz, who died in 2002, will go under the hammer at Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood on 11 September in their Exeter auction rooms. The works – 40 on paper and four easel paintings – come from the collection of The Lenkiewicz Foundation, the charity which promotes the legacy of the artist. Foundation chair Francis Mallett explains, “The pieces on sale are mostly works on paper – so-called ‘aesthetic notes’ – in which Robert explored his ideas about human relationships in text and images. He created a stunning visual language to get at the heart of what people experienced physiologically when they fell in love, or experienced loss, or became jealous.”

Francis has been involved in bringing many exhibitions of Lenkiewicz’ work to the public in this country and abroad. He also knew Robert Lenkiewicz very well for many years.
The Foundation's official canvas prints are drawn from the painter’s entire career and include works from Projects such as Vagrancy, Still-Life, The Painter with Women and Landscape. Advances in digital cameras and giclée canvas printing technology, combined with careful colour matching and attention to detail, ensure these prints look as faithful to the originals as possible. Over time The Lenkiewicz Foundation intends to make as much of the artist’s work available to collect as possible, at affordable prices.

6.00 pm – Rachael Gomery, TLF exhibitions officer, will present a slideshow introduction ‘Lenkiewicz and Diogenes: remember you will die’. A short film by Jeremy Elman will also be shown, which explores the relationship between the painter and the tramp.
6.45 pm – Dr Mark Price of Manchester Metropolitan University will speak on the theme ‘The Vagrant as Political Agent in the Work of Robert Lenkiewicz.’
Each Saturday to 30 April, 12noon – There will be a gallery talk each Saturday throughout the show starting at 12 noon (about 25 minutes duration).
Sun 10 April, 1.30–2.45pm – Lenkiewicz-trained painter Louise Courtnell will give a demonstration of self-portrait technique, explaining Lenkiewicz’s method for creating the illusion of three dimensions using tones, or shades of light and dark.
Sun 10 April, 3.30–4.15pm – Fotonow CIC presents an artist talk with, PHD photography student, Elizabeth Orcutt. Orcutt will discuss themes that have arisen during her practice-based research in self-portraiture and will pose the question: ‘In a world increasingly engorged with ‘selfies’, how do we understand the concept of self-portraiture?’

Come and join us for the Plymouth Art Weekender. The Lenkiewicz Foundation will be exhibiting works on paper from Project 14: The Painter with Mary: A Study in Obsessional Behaviour at St Saviours Hall on the Barbican.
Plymouth will be charged with activity all weekend as 300 artists and groups present work alongside 85 dedicated events. Exhibition details can be found on the Weekender website.

SUMMERS PLACE AUCTIONS TO SELL “EDDIE’S EYE 2 ”
A COLLECTOR'S VISION AND HIGHLIGHTS FROM HIS LENKIEWICZ COLLECTION
Summers Place Auctions are delighted to be offering the personal collection of Eddie Powell, the well known owner and curator of The Sculpture Park, in Churt, Surrey. Over the last 40 years Eddie has not only collected sculpture, but also paintings, photographs, furniture and objet d'art. The over 200 lots included in the sale on Tuesday, 23rd June 2015 will be reflecting this.
Eddie Powell is also a well-known collector of works by iconic artist Robert Lenkiewicz. The sale will include an important group of over 40 pictures and prints by the artist, with estimates from £80-150 for a print up to £20,000-30,000 for the top lot, The Painter with Samantha, an oil on canvas from 1989.
Works from the Lenkiewicz Legacy and the collection of Graham Carey will be offered for sale at Bearnes, Hampton & Littlewood's St Edmund's Court auction rooms in Exeter at 12 noon on Sat 28 March.
